Discover the two historic sites that make up La Cité de l’Or, located in Val-d’Or: the former Lamaque gold mine and the Bourlamaque Mining Village.
Become a miner for a day with a 300-foot descent underground to explore the galleries of the former Lamaque Mine. Visiting the essay laboratory, the shaft and the hoist room to understand the passing of solid ore to a liquid state, allowing the fabrication of a gold bar as the daily operations of a mining complex and to sample the gigantism of the equipment.
The exhibit “Gold in our veins” tells the stories of mining workers from the 1920’s to today, and explains the important role the Lamaque Mine played on the economic, social and cultural levels. Assisted by a variety of interactive tools, our visitors experiment what it feels like to drill rock. Discover the different trades and the life of these valorous men, proud builders of the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region.
Then, as a group or with your family, try your hand at geocaching and learn how GPS is used by today’s miners. Two themes: gold and mining.
